Trauma has a way of staying in the body long after an event is over. You might find yourself suddenly back in a moment you thought you’d moved past — triggered by a smell, a sound, a look on someone’s face. Or maybe it’s subtler than that: a constant sense of being on guard, a numbness you can’t shake, a difficulty trusting the world or the people in it.
Trauma doesn’t always look like flashbacks or nightmares. Sometimes it looks like irritability, disconnection, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling that you’re never quite safe — even when you know, logically, that you are.
Whatever your experience, you don’t have to keep managing this on your own.
You are not broken
Trauma responses are the nervous system’s way of trying to protect you. They made sense in the context of what happened. But when those responses continue long after the danger has passed, they can take over your life in ways that are painful and exhausting.
Healing from trauma is possible. It takes time, safety, and the right support — but people do recover, and they go on to live full, connected, meaningful lives.
What trauma can look like
• Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or distressing dreams
• Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected from yourself
• Hypervigilance — always scanning for danger, never able to fully relax
• Avoidance of people, places, or situations that feel triggering
• Intense emotional or physical reactions to reminders of the trauma
• Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
• Shame, guilt, or self-blame about what happened
• A sense that your life is somehow on hold
How trauma therapy works
Trauma therapy is not about reliving the past in painful detail. It’s about processing what happened in a way that allows your nervous system to finally recognise that it’s over — and to begin healing.
At Little Tree Psychology, we work carefully and compassionately. Safety always comes first. We use evidence-based approaches including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), trauma-focused CBT, and somatic-informed methods to support your healing at a pace that feels right for you.
We understand that trust can be difficult when you’ve been hurt. We take that seriously.
What healing can look like
• Fewer intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares
• A greater sense of safety in your body and in the world
• More capacity to be present in your daily life
• Improved relationships and ability to trust
• Reduced shame and a more compassionate view of yourself
• A sense that the past no longer controls the present
We’re here when you’re ready.
